Le istituzioni accademiche, nella loro articolata varietà, costituiscono luogo saliente di elaborazione dei processi culturali, nell’orizzonte di una efficace delineazione dell’identità europea.
La prospettiva umanistica, che la fede cristiana condivide e qualifica, costituisce l’orizzonte adeguato di tale sfida e riferimento sorgivo per tutti coloro che dedicano all’Università le loro energie e i loro pensieri, al fine di formare personalità robuste di protagonisti/servitori della vita civile e sociale. In prima istanza, emerge l’esigenza di ricondurre l’istituzione universitaria alla sua originaria ispirazione educativa. La frammentazione del sapere e, soprattutto, la tendenza culturale diffusa a interpretarlo strumentalmente impoveriscono l'Università e ne abbassano il profilo.
E’ necessario, perciò, un atteggiamento conoscitivo corretto. Che cioè non sia eliso - né eluso - il riferimento originario della ragione umana alla verità. Al porre, cioè, quelle domande fondamentali e insopprimibili che caratterizzano l’autocoscienza riflessiva dell’uomo e aprono l’orizzonte della conoscenza: la cultura non è riducibile al pragmatismo utilitaristico; al centro è e deve rimanere l’uomo, con la sua dignità e le sue esigenze. La fede cristiana ribadisce la centratura personalistica e autenticamente umanistica della cultura.
Nessun rinnovamento è possibile sul piano storico e sociale se non è preceduto, sostenuto e motivato da una profonda conversione personale. Essa sola ne garantisce l’autenticità: preserva dal mascheramento opportunista e rende capace di quella gratuità che è il sigillo dei maestri di vita.
E’ qui chiamata in causa, allora, la costitutiva dimensione culturale della fede: il sapere della fede ha carattere di dignità culturale qualificata.

L’orizzonte del nuovo umanesimo costituisce il cuore e la sorgente di ispirazione delle tematiche apparentemente disparate dei Convegni scientifici, in una tessitura organica di significati. Si possono delineare quattro ambiti principali.

Academic institutions in their great varieties, constitute the salient places for the elabo-ration of cultural processes for an effective delineation of the European identity. The humanistic perspective which the Christian faith shares and qualifies, constitutes an adequate reference horizon for such a challenge for all those who dedicate their energies and their thoughts to universities for the purpose of forming the robust personalities of those who will be the protagonists and servants of civil and social life. There arises, in the first instance, the need to lead university institutions back to their original educational inspiration. The fragmentation of knowledge, and above all the widespread cultural tendency to interpret knowledge instrumentally, impoverish the university and lower its profile. A correct cognitive attitude is therefore necessary. This means that the original refer-ence of human reason to truth should never be ignored. In posing those fundamental and insuppressible questions that characterize the reflexive consciousness of man – the human be-ing – and which open into the horizon of consciousness, since culture is not reducible to utili-tarian pragmatism; the center is and must remain the human being, with his dignity and his needs. Christian faith has always reaffirmed the personalistic centrality and the authentic humanism of culture. No renewal on the historical and social level is possible, if this is not preceded, sus-tained and motivated by a profound personal conversion. It is only personal conversion that guarantees authenticity. It saves one from an opportunistic masquerading of oneself and makes one capable of that type of gratuity that is the characteristic seal of the masters of life. The constitutive cultural dimension of religious faith is here called to duty. The knowl-edge of religious faith has the character of qualified cultural dignity. It is along these lines that the university should face new times and problems by rediscovering itself. The horizon of the new humanism constitutes the heart and the fountain of the inspira-tion of the apparently disparate themes of scientific conventions in an organic crafting together of meaning. We would delineate four principal sectors.
